I still don't understand however, why some tokens appear by themselves and some need to be defined manually in order to appear in the Token Balance. Anyone?

some tokens (usually the well knwon) already in the "DATABASE" .

as there are thousands of token (or even much more) mew can not add them all. so you simply have to add them. once you added your tokens they should appear automaticlly as soon as you are logged in.

Well, I think it's because of the much coins that are already in the MEW database, which now means every other coins that are to be added in the list of the coins that are there must be manually imputed for you to see the total quantity of the coin you have.

Tokens that are automatically listed/showing in MEW were listed as Default tokens. Coin owners are able to submit a request to MEW in order to be listed as one (reference here). On the other hand, the reason why users need to add a custom token manually to show it is either because there is no request to add it as a default token or the request is still in review.

I just use etherscan to check the token, it's a handy way to see tokens in your wallet, I do not want to bother displaying tokens manually, unless want to withdraw tokens.

this is easy, you just click add custom in myetherwallet and enter data like (contract address, symbol and decimal). this is a normal thing and if you do not add custom, your token will also not be lost. you need not worry about this.
