Startup: concerning issues, technical and social

I was paid to develop a bitcoin application.
It is working 100% as intended. However:

-It is using Blockchain.info API because we researched and found it is bad idea to host  .bitcoind  on a VPS
-- Is this true? We sure can make it work with .bitcoind -rpc   but we are unsure....

-Currently hosted on EC2 AWS vps , looking for alternative, we will sure look into your recommendations.
