I'm somewhat familiar with bitcoin but where can I buy bitcoins with paypal/credit card or an instant bank transfer? I don't like coinbase because it's not instant, mtgox requires wire transfer, bitinstant is temporarily closed, and virwox charges too many fees. What other sites do you recommend?

Buy from people. Just make sure to use escrow.

I've had good experience with BTCQuick.com.  They accept credit cards via Google Checkout.
