Just looking for your thoughts on the idea of moving my alts to Teather (based on the USD) to stop the bleeding until the drop stops.

When the whole market is crashing, there are only two ways to save your ass:
1. Convert everything into Fiat.
2. Exchange all coins with USDT.

Converting in Fiat comprises of lot of fees so USDT is a great way to remain out of this chaos. USDT adjust itself at about $1 as they are backed with US dollars to remain stable.

Converting to Fiat or Tether is a great trading strategy but the issue is when do you do the conversion?  It's easy to set a path after the event has happened and hard to do it before it happens.  Converting would of been great earlier in the week or even during last week.  Doing it today is another story.
