Hi all

I was hoping for some advise

At the moment I have access to free electricity  Grin

I have an old desktop computer running a i7 870 and a Nvidia GTS240 1gb (i know its near useless)

I was wondering if there was any alt coins which have a low enough difficulty that I could mine a decent amount of them with this set up. I'm not sure how long the free electricity will last so don't particular want to lay much money down and the PSU is only 350w so getting a new graphics card will need a psu upgrade.

Thanks

The difficulty of mining coins is constantly increasing. Why do you need it? Buy a good GPU and get the coin benefit. Until you have the opportunity to use the free electricity you will earn more. Then you will earn the same amount as all. But in any case you will earn. If you have a car, I see no reason to go to another city on a horse.

While not highly encouraged, I understand why someone would do this. From what I can gather Cryptonote based coins tend to be easier for CPU's to mine. You're looking at things like ETN, XMR, AEON, BCN, etc. Alternatively you could try Hodlcoin, just download the core wallet and activate mining. If you can work it out, coins using the blake2s algorithm also have minimal to no difference in mining with a CPU versus a CPU per their website. Hope that helps until you are able get you a proper GPU, we all start somewhere.

I am mining Monero with CPU and an ancient video card with only 2g of memory. My hashrate is better than a single 1070 card.  The gpu was an old one that had come out of my sons computer a couple years ago.

I'm making a couple usd each day.  It's not much but I'm learning alot while doing it and reading these forums.  Later this month, I will be purchasing two more GPU.  Everytime I think I have my mind made up about what I will buy, I change my mind.  Frustrating, but I want to make a good decision.

from days i am searching for the same answer because i have an old cpu Pentium 4 with 1gb memory and 128mb Radeon graphic card.
i didn't used it for 5 years and few days before the idea came in my mind i should start mining with that useless Computer.
maybe it will not profitable but i will do it to educate myself and learn about mining.
