Armory disconnected from bitcoin node

Hi,

I've been banging my head against the wall for several days here, would appreciate any help I can get.  I'm running Windows 8.1, 64bit.

No matter what I do, I can't seem to get Armory to connect to the Bitcoin node.

I've tried so many version combinations it's making my head spin.

I tried going back to 96.2 and Bitcoin Core 15.0 based on this guy's advice (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RxkEDJRkn3s), but it still says Node Offline.

I've tried 96.3 with 15.0 and with 15.1; neither worked (same problem recurs)

I've tried 96.3.99 with 15.0 and 15.1; neither worked

I'm now trying 96.3.991, but I can't even seem to get it started (keeps freezing on the startup screen).

So, first question, what version combo should I be using to get Armory to connect properly to the bitcoin node?
Second question - does the order matter in which I open Armory and Bitcoin Core?  Do I even need to have Bitcoin Core open while Armory is running?
Third question - is there anything else I can do to make armory connect properly?

Use the latest RC but delete your Armory/databases folder before starting it.

Tried that. 

First, I uninstalled Armory. 
- Ran the uninstall .exe
- Made sure the Armory folder was gone from the Program Files folder. 
- Manually deleted the Armory folder from the Users/App Data /Roaming/ folder.
- Ran CCleaner to remove any leftover registry entries

Then, when I try to reinstall Armory (96.3.991), I get past the installation screen, accept the user agreement, and then it just freezes on the startup logo that says "ARMORY" in the middle of the screen.  Above it is a green loading bar that says 'Loading 100%' and it just stays stuck there. 

I tried the above with both Bitcoin Core 15.0 and 15.1; same results.

Don't use RC2. Use RC1, or wait for RC3 (has a Windows fix) to come out in a day or two. Also, just to confirm, you do have bitcoind in the location where Armory is looking, correct? The location is in the logs.

When I try with RC1, then Armory does actually start up, but the original problem persists (doesn't connect to bitcoin node).  And yes, bitcoind is in the right location.

Okay. Please post the logs again, after making sure that ArmoryDB isn't already running when you start Armory. (You can go into the task manager and kill ArmoryDB if it's already running.)

Okay, I tried again from scratch with Armory RC1 and Bitcoin Core 15.1

When I installed Armory RC1 and started it up, Bitcoin Core was already running.

This time, I got a bit further than prior times.  Armory successfully completed the Database Scanning & Building phase.  Once this was done, then it actually said 'Node online' at the bottom (for the first time ever!). 

I then proceeded to import an old wallet that I'm trying to restore.  Armory imported the wallet and began Scanning Transaction History.  Everything seemed to be going okay, and after a couple of hours it was at ~20% complete.

Then, out of nowhere, I see an error message that the connection to Bitcoin Node was lost, and the message at the bottom once again said 'Node offline'.

I waited a while, but the 'Node offline' message persisted.  I quit Armory, shut down ArmoryDB from task manager, and restarted Armory.  When I restarted, it immediately defaulted to 'Node offline' again and hasn't changed since.  It still says 'Scanning Transaction History' (started from 0% again), but I suspect it won't finish since it's not connected to the bitcoin node.

Core has to be running in order for Armory to send transactions, see the wallet balance, etc. Please start up Core.

Core is running the whole time, but Armory just won't connect to it for some reason
