reduce asic noise from 60 to 26db!

Hello everyone,

I own a few asic miners and as everyone know, they are noisy because of their fans. I tried reducing the noise by changing the fan, but it either ends up in (1) the blowing power being insufficient for powerful asics or (2) the noise still being high compared to standard computer fans. So I decided to go with a custom solution. I want your opinion on it.

It makes less noise to go for bigger fan surface. There are adapters for 80 to 120mm fans. So I'm guessing it's possible to craft a custom fan adapter that would accept 4 times 120mm or 140mm fans as input, and output the air on a 120mm asic. It should equal or surpass the standard noisy fan performance, but noise output would be very slow. A rough guess is 26 to 28db instead of 60db for the standard asic fan.

It should cost about 20$ to craft, and 4 fans would be about $15 total, so it's a $35 mod that could bring back home mining (at least for the noise problem) !

Has it already been done ? Have you guys heard about such a solution before ? Do you think it would be a good buy (as in: would you actually buy it?)

I'll go and make it, and I'll keep this post updated if enough people are interested.

 good luck but it won't work for the s-9  the heat sinks   have very tight spaces so a high velocity fan is needed .

best results are use of a box and duct

Maybe use a fan out of an old HVAC air handler ducted to multiple ASIC boxes?

Before you go wasting money -- read the various threads already here dealing with the s7/s9 noise. Hell, even as far back as the s4 it was being addressed.... Especially the parts about needing to have high airflow against high static pressure.

The Cosair 120's are useless. While called 'high pressure' that is only relative to normal PC fans. If you find the graphs you will see that there is only a few 10's of CFM at the high pressure end. The miners need at least 200CFM against pressure and that in turn means <drum roll please> high speed and loud fans.

Now using a blower -- that's another story...

I think the CFM/pressure needed is overrated. Any asic using 100% power will be well below critical temperature in a decently cooled place.

The fans used on asics are noisy is because better mechanisms are more expensive and nobody would pay a premium for a better design, not because they need to be high CFM and static pressure.

Since you feel that what has been common knowledge for the past few years and been *proven* time and again by folks trying different fans not to mention, folks like me who design power electronics for a living and repeatedly took the time to explain the how's/why's of forced-air cooling along with what causes the siren-effect does not matter hey, go for it.

High pressure is required to move adequate air volume against high resistance. The ridiculous solidity of the cross section of an Antminer presents a lot of resistance. High volume is required to move the ridiculous amount of heat from the ASICs running 100% power, otherwise the die temperatures hot enough to boil water would start getting more like hot enough to melt solder, or start glowing and burst into flames.

So yeah, high CFM at high static pressure is sorta essential to the process.

I took apart all my avalons and all my s-9's to clean the dust from them.

the avalon fins  are big and fat with lots of space the s-9s are tight


see what happens when you don't clean them (s-9) the tight spots fill with dust and shorts happen.

I don't have any S9 or antminer products, only other brands. Maybe that's why I'm more optimistic than I should be?

Ah, that would be why you're talking about 60db fans instead of about 85db.

Other brands such as what, Dragon miners? Since around mid-2014 all bitcoin miners have been based on high power density packed into a large metal shoe-box format. The s4 was the last decent rack mount style. If you are talking altcoin rigs then oops -- wrong section as this is Bitcoin hardware only...

Since then all be they from Bitmain, Canaan (Avalons), Ebang, Hotmine.io, et al are all based on the densely packed shoe-box format.

As Philipma pointed out, so far the Avalons are the only ones where some thought went into the airflow design and as a result are a fair bit quieter than the other makes but still far from being 'quiet' due to the sheer volume of air that still has to be moved to carry away heat. That said, the A721/741 only need one fan to do it.

Bitmain oth... Basic rules of air flow 101 which they totally ignored:
a. Avoid turbulence at all costs. The vortices create noise and back pressure.
  What did Bitmain do? use an ass load of separate heatsinks. Bad enough that each one creates turbulence at the front and exit ends, worse is that they are not even aligned straight with each other. End result of all that turbulence? Back pressure. So much that Bitmain requires 2 fans to move the air needed vs Avalons only needing 1 fan.

b. Never have rapidly spinning blades close to fins or other fixed structures with substantial surface area. That is called making a siren. Even adding only 1-2" more space between the fans and heat sinks will break that coupling and yes some folks do sell printed spacer tunnels just for this.
