Does bitcointalk have a subscription function? Why do people subscribe?

Do you mean like get notified when there are new replies in a specific post? Look at the top-right part of the post for watch and notify.

Watch will add the thread to your Watchlist, where you will see every thread that has new replies.
Notify will enable email notifications about new replies.
