Collateral is things that can be held by someone and sold easily for what you owe should you default. I cannot sell your ID unless I have your social.

Payday loans, you sign over your title of your car, and get a $1000 loan. The car which they techinically own now is collateral. Showing them your ID as you request the loan is not.

Make a point of providing collateral that can be easily sold for $400 should you not pay back.
