Untether my first rig

I was wondering if anyone can give me some pointers.
I started my first 6x gpu rig right around xmas and i feel it is ready to fly on its own.
Everything is working fine with the occasional freeze about once a week.

I'm looking at building my 2nd rig and since I only have 3 displays (2 for my work pc and 1 for configuring/monitoring rigs), I need to let this one fly solo.

Here are my details:

mobo: Asus Prime Z270-p (currently using the dvi port for the onboard chip)
cpu: celeron g3930
mouse+kb: both usb
gpus: 6x sapphire nitro+ 4gb

I read somewhere that I might need a dvi dummy plug once I "cut the cord"

As it is right now... after I enabled 4g decoding there's no longer a bios post... I'm assuming that's fine since windows boots up normally.

I have recently got my TP-link smart plug... tested and it works like magic.

Have installed teamviewer as well and the last step is to set it free. )

Any pointers are greatly appreciated.

You don't need dummies for polaris cards. And you could use one for the onboard graphics, but it's not necessary as well — if you enable iGPU Multi-Monitor option in the BIOS your onboard graphics will initialize at the boot without any dummy plugs.

do I need to change something in the bios so that I don't get any errors?

You won't have any problems with that (unless you specifically set your BIOS to make the system halt when no keyboard/mouse is detected). By default most motherboards do not care about input peripherals and proceed to loading the OS without those attached just fine.

There is no explicit option on the intel motherboards to enable onboard graphics. You can only select the order in which graphics are initialized, and it's either onboard first or PEG first. The problem is, if you don't have anything connected to the onboard (an actual monitor, or a dummy plug that pretends to be one), even when you have the bios set to "onboard first", your onboard graphics still won't initialize. Which is not a bad thing, as you don't really need it for a mining rig. But there's one inconvenience with not having the onboard initialized and/or no dummy plugs in one of the main GPUs: your screen resolution will be stuck at 640*480, and while it's manageable, it is a bit annoying. To get around this, you either need to have onboard graphics initialize somehow, or connect something (display/dummy) to one of the main GPUs. One way to initialize the onboard graphics is to plug a dummy to one of the ports (I use cheap hdmi=>vga connectors for that). Another option is to enable iGPU Multi-Monitor option in the BIOS — it makes the onboard initialize even without any dummy plugs. It's kind of a software solution to the problem, but there are some small nuances with having the onboard initialize this way (so some user still prefer dummy plugs). Don't really worry about this stuff for now, it'll work fine without keyboard, mouse and display.

KVM switches are pretty cheap. You can get one so you can use the same keyboard, video (monitor), and mouse on more than one computer.

They're useless for mining rigs. When you actually need to use the same set of kb/mouse/monitor with multiple computers then sure, you get a switch. But a mining rig doesn't need any of those.

So I finally got to untether the first rig and I'm seeing some weird stuff.

WATCHDOG: GPU 0 hangs in OpenCL call, exit

GPU0 is actually the one plugged into the pci bus 1:0:0 which is the PCI x16 on the mobo.
fans not working and hangs.
Claymore(10.6) keeps trying to restart and goes into a loop.

What's interesting is that if I plug a monitor into the onboard dvi port... everything works fine.

HwInfo shows no errors...

Any ideas???

Update - 01/31/18 12:43pm

i replaced the riser for GPU0 and it looked a little bit oxidized.
However, now, Claymore seems to get stuck:

it lists all 6 cards as rx 570 ellesmere 4096 mb 32 compute units

and then gets stuck on:
POOL/SOLO version

Update - 01/31/18 3:11pm

after fiddling with it for a couple of hours it is working perfectly fine right now.

I ended up removing the cards 1 by 1 and testing...
every single time claymore would hang on gpu 0 no matter which that was...
So I realized it was not the cards or any of the risers (although the one connected to the pcie x16 was oxidized)

I ended up plugging a hdmi to vga dummy and everything went just dandy...
it's been hashin stable for about an hour... no drops no freezes I can check in with teamviewer and everything looks good.
steady at 28mh/s all 6 with 69° across the board.

will update if any issues show up later on

If you really want to set it free you need to run linux. You are already stating you get weekly crashes.

E.G. This is one of my 6 card 1070 rigs:

I would love to... but wouldn't know where to start. ok that's not totally true, but I guess I'm a bit to busy/lazy to start from scratch

Until I get some time off to be able to dld a distro and start dabbling in rudimentary linux commands, I'll have to stick to win.
About 14 years ago I tried installing suse on a machine and it was a-phuken-nitemare... everything had to be manually mounted and I just gave up.

What would be a good distro to start learning nowadays? I hear a lot about ubuntu?
also... what, if any differences from running a linux sys just for shits and giggles and running one dedicated for mining?
I'm assuming all core operations are still CLI not GUI based?

^ this is how I roll. I use a seriously outdated laptop to SSH into all my mining gear from anywhere in the house.
