You don't need to get verified unless you want to deposit or withdraw fiat currency, so no, it's not strictly necessary. And, yes you can use all of their other services without verification.

DO NOT use MtGOX.

You cant withdraw CASH OR BTC. Yes even with BTC you're risking having stuck bitcoin less for a week or more.
