A Turkish amateur side claim they are the first football club to have paid for a player with cryptocurrency.

Omer Faruk Kıroglu was rewarded 0.0524 in Bitcoin (£384.12 at 18:00 GMT) and 2,500 Turkish lira (£467.30) to join Harunustaspor, who compete in the Sakarya First Division Group B.

"We did it to make a name for ourselves in the country and the world," club chairman Haldun Sehit told CNN Turk.

"As my chairman said, we are doing something new," added the player.

Cryptocurrency is growing in popularity within sport.

Arsenal recently signed a sponsorship deal with a cryptocurrency company, while Barcelona forward Lionel Messi and boxer Floyd Mayweather have promoted the financial technology.

This is great when there is a sports field that approaches the cryptocurrency world. In recent times, many corporations and large corporations have started using cryptocurrency for payment, which is a very good signal from the community for the cryptocurrency market.

Floyd Mayweather's total earnings is $105,000,000 and a guy like Lionel Messi is $80,000,000. Just imagine if these guys got

paid in bitcoins.  Roll Eyes ..... The amount paid to this amateur Turkish player might sound like something insignificant, but imagine

if this becomes a trend, globally and all sport clubs start doing this.  Huh A snowball starts very small and gradually becomes

bigger and bigger.  Grin

basically this sums it up.
from what i have been seeing, it seems like many are trying to gain publicity through bitcoin and cryptocurrencies. not long ago i thought it was a rare thing that someone does something like this, but apparently the examples are growing.

And I belive that it is the right thing that’s happening with the bitcoin. I’m sure this news will now over spread everywhere and slowly come into the international market as well. This way new ideas will start generating in the minds of different sport player or even the coaches to reward their player. Again, they are in the news, the news is in the international market, and another cycle. Wow, that way we might just see some sparkling bitcoin sport! Lolz.

Just imagine if a big soccer club announced in the game that today’s reward is going to be 100 BTC for the man of the match. Dam that game would be the historical one and the market would be worth watching next day.  Cheesy

meh, like the another user said, this is nothing more than a way to gain free publicity, I mean, they could've easily paid the £384 in fiat, but I guess they wanted to bring attention to the club.
Iit is good that this news might help bring a positive light on bitcoin worldwide since this news has gained a lot of attention in the international media, but I don't see this becoming a new trend any time soon, at least not in professional football clubs.

But its still a good way to market their team and bitcoin. Maybe some of the players are really into crypto that's why they decided to accept it as way of investment as well. 50 cent did it in 2014, accepting bitcoin as payment for his album and made him richer in 2018.

As I have said, this is a win-win situation, bitcoin will be recognize, media have been portraying bitcoin in a negative way since the beginning, but kind of move will have fans notice that there are more positive side on bitcoin as well.

Well, that's not biggest transfer on this year Winter Transfer Window Cheesy But it's great way to get attention from Worldwide media. Small club like this one have to do something unusual, new to become visible. How many people heard about this club before these news? Now their name was written in all main football news websites. Many even bigger clubs can learn from this story how to get lot of media attention without spending millions.

This is really a very positive news for crypto-lovers. This will get BTC more publicity and people will get motivated to accept Bitcoin as a alternative mode of payment. I am glad that sports also get involved in this revolutionary economical changing happening at global level.

Wonderful. Probably the football player has heard what happened to the bitcoins 50cents had gotten in 2014.
Anyway it's a good news. Every news about accepting bitcoin from any one can make it more popular.

It's not new - Overstock originally enabled bitcoin just to gain publicity amongst the crypto crowd, and they ended up with a lot of people who would normally only shop at Amazon, making accounts with them just to use bitcoin as their payment method. So it works...
