Armory install version 96 Deb64 GCC 4.7 or GCC 5.3 ?

I am running a fresh install of Linux Lite 3.6, 2x Intel(R) Pentium 4 CPU, 3.4GHz
Armory 0.96.0 for Ubuntu/Debian 64-bit with GCC 5.3 doesn't seem to work for me.
It looks like it installed ok, but...  If click the Armory Icon nothing happens.
If I type armory at the command line it gives an exception a null pointer or something, and just quits.
Armory 0.96.0 for Ubuntu/Debian 64-bit with GCC 4.7 does work.
But gcc --version gives
gcc (Ubuntu 5.4.0-6ubuntu1~16.04.4) 5.4.0 20160609

Does not make sense to me? gcc 5.4 should cover 5.3?
