This is the question that confuses a lot of content writers. Especially those who are just starting in this business.

Setting your rates and fees can be difficult if you don't really know how to sell your work, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that you should hand over the wheel to someone else and let your potential clients guesstimate the value of your labor.

If you don't do the homework beforehand, you'll probably end up in situations where you'll either work for peanuts or scare away potential clients with unrealistic fees and rates.

There are five major types of freelance writing rates:

* By the project (flat rate)
* By the hour
* By the word
* By the page
* Retainer fee

Best case scenario, you develop a general idea how to charge your clients by all of these rates, because some of them will insist on paying you in accordance with the system that's most logical to them.

For example, tech companies will always ask for rates per hour. This is how they value their own work and how your efforts will make sense to them.
