Unknown wallet.dat - please help

Hi,

I collected some cryptos a while ago but haven't done so for a while. After moving computers etc. I am left with around 5 wallet.dat files that probably have some coins in them. The problem is that I can't remember what coins the wallet.dat files belong to. Stupid I know, but, is there a way to see what coin a wallet.dat file belong to?

I have not experience this issue,but since there's only five of them,why not try all of them one by one,if the wallet.dat is not compatible on the coin it will show error and the wallet will not run properly try it and update us.

Yes, well I used to have like 30-40 different coins and it would be a lot of syncing and trying but if I can't find a way, then thats what i have to do

do you know if your coins that you removed were recent or old? if they were recent you cna sync pretty fast, otherwise there is n way to tell what coin they belong to, the format for the wallet dat is all the same

use pywallet to export/dump the wallet data, the addresses was not good, because the address prefix is for bitcoin.
(it is possible that pywallet cannot read the wallet, thats because the altcoin used a not strandard tx/blocks fields, but that could helps to exclude some coins, which is use standard tx/blocks.)

And you have some transactions, and source can search the tx hash in public block explorers. if you found the tx, you found the altcoin too.

Is there a eli5 tutorial on using pywallet? I tried for weeks to get keys from a corrupted wallet and just could never get it to work

Try searching for coin names with a hex editor like UltraEdit.
I looked in a .dat just now and i did NOT see the coin trade symbol.
But it may give you some clues.
For example, i looked in my Wallet.dat for JackPotCoin
I seen a string mentioning JPCDice ..which would be a dead giveaway if i was guessing.

I also for shits & giggles just tried loading a Wallet.dat file with PEiD
and then i loaded the default plugin called "StringViewer" and it did show some.

YOU KNOW what coins you likely had dealt with before so you can prob narrow it down.
Get in there with a hex editor and start looking for various names with a "ASCII String" search.
Like maybe try Doge or BTC or XMR or XPM etc

The only way is to cycle through all crypto wallets that you have ever used/downloaded. Then try to import it.

Check appdata/roaming if you have not uninstalled these wallets it will give you a good idea of what you have previously installed.

On windows search %APPDATA% check roaming you will find multiple wallets there.

Try searching for coin names with a hex editor like UltraEdit.

As a simple solution for Mac, I used Textedit on an old wallet from August 2014, and was able to see from the address prefixes that it is a Dogecoin wallet.  EDIT: also I tried searching for a coin name as you suggested and it did work, found the name "doge"
