You can tell them directly that this is a new type of digital currency, the first cryptocurrency in the blockchain, and has a great investment value.

You dont need to explain to him so hard, there are many guides here in forum and google, also there are bitcoin explanation in youtube for him to watch. Just make it basic first like bitcoin is a digital currency that can use to send or receive online.
