12:00 to 16:00 GMT (For North America, 7:00 am to 11:00 am CST)

Passing Bitcoin Around the World is a significant exercise in the power of Bitcoin.  This simple little demonstration shows so many things that Bitcoin enables when compared to the legacy currencies, and the institutions and technologies that attempt to work around the limitations of these legacy currencies.

  • Bitcoin provides a frictionless mechanism for mobilizing money
  • Because addresses are in the Block Chain, a fund raising drive can be audited by anyone and everyone in real time
  • The setup for participation is so very fast.  Participants simply need to deposit their coin prior to their turn
  • International boundaries are no barriers
  • The participation barrier is so terribly low. A Participant needs no permissions, no bank account, no trip to Western Union, no Merchant account

How can you help?

  • You can participate.  Go to http://PassingBitcoin.com to learn how.
  • You can promote.  We need more participants, particularly in Africa, South America, and Asia.
  • You can donate.  Any Bitcoin you provide to the Passing Bitcoin donation address for the event will be donated to Sean's Outpost at the end of the event.  If you register, do not participate, but specify a charity, that donation will be made at the end of the event
  • You can audit. All the Bitcoin Addresses being used are published on the site.  You can be sure donations are going to these charities (or returned to participants) as required by the rules of the event.

No Donation is required to Participate

Consider spending a little time on Saturday participating in a demonstration of Bitcoin's utility and value!

I have been contacted by one of the participants.  They were wondering if they could participate earlier rather than later in the event.

Absolutely.  Or you can participate later in the event, if that works with your schedule.  The event will go for four hours, guaranteed.  If we have the participants, we will go longer.

How can we be so flexible?  This is Bitcoin.  Of course we can be flexible!

All we need is for you to give us a bit of info, set up your wallet, request the deposit account, and fund your deposit account.  We can do that in minutes.  Even as the event unfolds.  Then after your turn, we return your BTC, and/or we donate it to your charity, per your instructions.

So if you are worried about someone running a scam here, Audit the event yourself in real time.  We give you all the addresses.  And the websites of the charities, and their Bitcoin addresses.  You can see that we are returning Bitcoin to participants, and/or passing on the Bitcoin to the participant's designated charities In Real Time

Folks, this is huge.  In this world you are forced to trust others.  When you donate to some fundraiser, you have to hope they are not pocketing the money you give.  Normally, that is where it ends.  With hope.  But with Bitcoin, you  get to audit in real time.  You are reduced from hoping in general and forever, to hoping your donation is treated as fairly As you know the previous donations were, for a FACT.

Anyway, I hope to see you all tomorrow!

Where should people go to know when it's their turn? I've seen mentions of IRC, which network/channel are you using?

I will have a page up with the IRC channel (and a web client, if you want to use that).

Yes.  You can get it back if you do not wish to donate it.  Or get back 95 percent of it, if you want to donate a little.  Totally up to you.

But we are passing you 1 BTC.  If you run away with the 1 BTC, we use your deposit to keep going.

It is the easiest and most fair and safe way to do this.  You do have to trust me, but my identity is well known on Reddit, in Austin Texas with the Bitcoin meetup, the Mini Bitcoin Conference Series in Austin, etc.  And Bitcoin allows the real time auditing of the handling of these deposits.

I love the new charitable businesses that are getting shared Smiley This is the kind of thing Bitcoin needs, I will share this thread in Facebook groups and eventually start making FB events (unless you do that already).

And I will help however I can, and donate whenever I can.
