So - I responded to an ad on this forum - the guy claiming to have 1 BTC to sell and would take PayPal.

I contacted him and because of my refusal to send first, my insistence on using escrow for a different method of payment - and perhaps mainly my lack of stupidity in not falling for his scam he left me a negative trust - how can I get this removed as it is so wrong?

I have all the pm's to back this up.

Not sure about getting the trust reset (maybe contact a moderator?) but you can generally pay first with PayPal and be covered by PayPal's buyer protection.  You just open a PayPal dispute if the seller doesn't deliver and PayPal will always side with you. (hence why sellers don't like PP since fraudulent buyers can abuse this power)

I'm not too sure you can actually have anyone remove trust that isn't "fair". The mods and theymos should theoretically have the power to remove them, but I highly doubt they would as it goes against the principles of having an unmoderated trust system. There is no point in having a trust system if the trust can be arbitrarily changed or removed as it just breaks the system and is open for abuse. I wish you luck in trying, but don't get your hopes up.

Look at his Trust: petronsiva -6: -1 / +0(0)

I don't think you have any worries, I doubt he's on anyone's Trust list.

When the subject of buying BTC with Paypal comes up, I often remember this:

Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

Thanks for the responses - in a way the trust system is designed in such a way that now I am fearful of trying to expose a scammer as they will just neg trust me. I will know better next time.

Nope, Theymos is the only one with the power to remove trust ratings, however I don't know of a single case where he has. Negative feedback isn't a big deal if the person leaving the feedback doesn't have any proof or grounds for the negative feedback, most people will just disregard it.

Ah ok, thanks for clarification on that point, wasn't too sure about it. As a side note, would you happen to know why the scammer tag is no longer given out?

It is being abused right now, people are falsely accusing of people of things which are far from the truth based on theories and lack of knowledge and destroying genuine business opportunities.
I m bitter cuz it happened to me, it didnt destroy my rep completely but it did slow it down.

 Sad

Unless I'm reading this wrong...

....The guy didn't even give you NEGATIVE trust. He just left normal Trust with "PayPal scammer" in the comments and 1.0 BTC risked.

Anyway. Like I've mentioned in other threads, Trust isn't a black and white indicator of trust/being a scammer/whatever. It's a person's opinion of you. No one is really going to care that someone with negative Trust called you a PayPal scammer.

It looks like you have 3 spam negative Trusts for someone you don't get along with. That shouldn't effect business opportunities. Tongue

The other negative Trust you have looks like it could be suspicious, but again, that's really up to the people checking out your Trust. For instance, I wouldn't really care about the negative Trust you have if we were going to do business.

Now if you have 3 unknowns and 2 reputable people saying you stole BillyBobSoAndSo's 50 BTC, with screenshot proof and links to the thread, that's another matter.

I always follow the "ratings", read the References and make a decision. Plenty of people I don't like for whatever reasons that I would still do and have done business with.

The scammer tag is no longer given out, because it was solely up for Theymos to decide, and he required more than outstanding evidence to actually issue the tag. Its easier for everyone to just have a personal feedback system in which you can learn about a potential scammer in fewer than the 6 month process to issue a scammer tag.

Technically I think they are still given out today, but only to much larger scale scammers, and again, with evidence that leaves not a doubt.

I always follow the "ratings", read the References and make a decision. Plenty of people I don't like for whatever reasons that I would still do and have done business with.

This is exactly how it is supposed to work. The numbers don't mean anything, the entire system is supposed to be a reference, not an all mighty judge of trustworthiness. If you see positive feedback left from people you trust, then that should mean something to you. If you see feedback left from someone you have never heard of, or don't respect their judgement, its business as usual.
