I have been looking into CPU mining of some alternative coins, none of the software that I have looked into will open on my laptop.
Just want to know some basic CPU software that works on Windows and does anyone have any opinions on which coins will jump in the future so I am not completely wasting my time?

Most of the Alt-Coins will have a miner button built into the Client software.
Bitcoin used to be like this, but they removed it after it became impossible to mine with a CPU.

+1 Difficulty is rising fast for alt coins like Litecoin so its better if you switch to a coin that can only be CPU mined

Mining in a laptop is a bad idea  Tongue The returns of cpu mining doesn't make up for the risk of damaging your computer.

The only way to profit with CPU mining is to mine a coin that is only minable with CPUS.

So PPC (Primecoin) comes to mind, but there are others.

If your budget is limited, it wouldn't hurt to look into VPS based CPU mining.  Most VPS providers aren't going to give you GPU access so might as well utilize those CPU cores.

Check out this guide out for more info.  https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=270420.0
