What are the dynamics of LTC/BTC? Especially around peak time for BTC/USD? Earlier this year, LTC/BTC peaked right before BTC/USD. Why?

People used the rising value of bitcoin to buy litecoin.  The difficulty changed significantly at the time and the rewards on mining had halved as well.  As the price rose, people diversified using their new found wealth.
