Ok so I have 13 units in total - 2 different hubs the rest are plugged into the computer. The units & printer finds them all so np there but;

This happens pretty often (not all units being mined, or the software bugging out) - after a few startups eventually I get them all (usually). But how come, what could the matter be?

You could try the device manager 'clean up' procedure described in https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=300638.0
I'm running more than 40 USB devices, with 8 hubs.  You need to be patient and connect them gradually, make sure that they are recognized before connecting the next lot.

Cheers

ok go to your hubs and unplug them and on the plugs there should be some info saying

output xxx 2A or something
this is normaly caused by not enough power going to the hubs
