What alts are out there that are using algorithms aside from SHA256 and Scrypt?

Yac is one I believe it uses Scrypt-Jane. Prime is another.

Skeincoin uses Skein and SHA2

Blakecoin uses Blake and SHA2

Quark uses 8 random algorithms and as clones of it so do SecureCoin and Offerings

The reason I was interested is because I had a discussion the other day about GPU mining. GPU mining is best on altcoins with newer algos, so I wanted to have a few to look into.

And quark, having six hash-functions on top of one another.

Can a GPU mine Skein and Blake?

GPUs can mine anything a CPU can. Might take a bit to get the algos running efficiently, but they can.

I believe there is a Blake GPU miner in the thread for Blakecoin. Skein's GPU miner isn't finished, but there's active development going on in the SKC thread.

Nxt's mining algo works with the same speed on CPU, GPU and ASICs (when they are implemented).  Wink

And Nxt is full PoS with one man holding the stake. Lol.

How is the algo universalized in that way?

R u asking about Nxt? It's time-bound. U can do only 1 calculation to get at what point in the future u can mine a block. U can do the calculation zillion times but u always be getting the same result until a new block is mined.

Interesting. I assume the calculation is based on your identifier plus other pieces?

What's to stop running a huge quantity of parallel instances?

It depends on coins on a balance. If u split ur balance u have to wait longer.

So it's a very exclusive currency. Once it gets going break in mining will become difficult.
