Hi all,
my nickname says all.
I first heard about bitcoin during 2011 but didn't understand it, folded and moved on.
Last days I read about their value near to $1000 and it ruined my days because I was near to get this train but didn't.

Now I would like to enter and hope someone can address me to the first steps to do.

First of all, I guess, I need to make a wallet, right? Where/how can I do this?

Do I need a wallet for every cryptocurrency I would like to hold?

Thx in advance for your patience and cooperation

Hello, I wish I had gotten into Bitcoin sooner as well! A good offline wallet I like to use is Bitcoin-qt, haven't had any issues with it thus far. And yes you will need a separate wallet for each coin you wish to have. Hope this helps a little!

As far as information goes, if you want to get an understanding of everything I would point you to the the Bitcoin wiki https://en.bitcoin.it/wiki/Main_Page which has a lot of information, all of course Bitcoin related. With wallets it depends on whether your using the official client, or Electrum/Armory/Multibit or an online wallet like blockchain.info.

Remember that online wallets are more vulnerable, because you have to trust a third part, and the sites could be hacked. With bitcoin-qt, you store your BTC on your computer and not on the internet. But with this you have to remember a bcakup of your wallet on a usb stick or smth, in case your machine crashes.

No , you don't store BTC on your computer.
You store the keys that make possible to spend those BTC.
If anybody gets your private keys they can spend them .

thx for your help

At the moment I'm not using anything and would like to start with the correct foot: my idea is to have an offline wallet to store coins and another tool to make "transactions".

What do you suggest?
