Using mac OSX for mining, mainly diablo

Hey all,

Due to my uni course I HAVE to use a mac OSX, and keep coming into problems as this is probably the least supported of the major OS's. My current main problem as I'm setting up wallets, joining LTC mining pools via asteroid, etc, but some of the downloads, mainly from github, don't work. I'm not sure if they download right, as I get no .dmg to run an install but a host of unix and files that look like they will help (DiabloMiner.OSX.sh) but it says there are no programs that know how to execute them.

Is it a simple case of a few terminal commands to run the installer?

Also has anyone else here used mining pools on OSX and would like to share some advise?

I'm the developer for Asteroid, perhaps I can help!

To get up and running with mining, you should need only a wallet program, a mining program, and have signed up at a mining pool through their website.

For wallets, the official clients are Bitcoin-qt for Bitcoin, and Litecoin-qt for Litecoin.

For mining, Asteroid (yes I am biased) is the easiest, and requires no additional software or special setup.  Just download it, open, select your pool from the drop-down, enter in your username and password, and you should be mining.

Ah perfect. Thing is annoyingly the only mining program I've been able to get to work is asteroid as I could clearly see the application installer. So I am currently cruising along at 90MHs, thanks to you and your team Thanks a bunch.

The main problem still stands though, for miners like diablo, or applications like homebrew, or even most alternative currencies wallets, I can simply not get to install on OSX when the websites clearly states it does work..

A lot of Bitcoin software is still pretty niche and requires technical expertise to get up and running (knowledge of the command-line, drivers, source code, etc), and some of it is quite dated too.  The next evolution in Bitcoin software is bridging the gap between the tech wizards and the general public.  The only way this will happen is if it's easy to use and if it stands up to scrutiny from the tech-savvy community.  It won't happen overnight, but it's getting easier everyday.  Compared to the rest of the world, you're still on the cutting edge of a very new field

Thanks, all makes sense. The only thing really annoying me at the moment is that even though my GPU (GTX 560 Ti) works natively in OSX, but im not sure what a good MHs reading is, is 90 good with no system instability?

It just seems a waste to not mine BTC with my processor too as I've one of the best intel i7 processors. How would ppl recommend I go about mining BTC on mac, whilst still using asteroid to mine LTC? I've no linux experience but am pretty good with coding in general.

The network difficulty for Bitcoin is so astronomically high right now that it's really impractical to mine with your processor.  In fact, it's generally not practical to mine with your GPU either which is many times more efficient than a CPU at bitcoin mining.  USB devices are the future of mining.

If you want to mine multiple coins simultaneously, you'll have to look at software a bit more complex than Asteroid.  A project called MultiMiner has a Mac version and should help you in that regard (and I know the developer, good guy). Good luck!

Thanks for the advice, one strange thing though, when I click or right click > save as on the releases named 2.xxxx.app.zip it downloads ina second and im not left with the right file .... happens with the binaries too. Do they work for you?

It seems to work okay for me.  You could try a normal left-click on it to avoid any problems with any downloader scripts on the server-side.  You can also contact the author on this forum, his username is "nwoolls", for additional info.

No I think it must be a weird thing with my browser or OSX they just dont work, none of those green button on github work.
