Hi.

I intend to mine some altcoins, but I have read, that there are many scams in this field.
Can I be ever sure, that some altcoin mining software does not contain any malware? I know, that using updated OS and antivirus software reduces risks, but they are still there. What additional security measures would you recommend? If this bad miner/malware manages to fool my antivirus software, how should I prevent it from making it too much damage?

For example I have recently read this:

and I don't want to have same experience as that guy.

If you stick to mining altcoins that are traded on major exchanges like Cryptsy, you should be fine.

And what if I want to mine some new currency, which is not on Cryptsy or any other well known exchange yet? Any suggestions how to reduce risks?

You can never be sure any software is without malware,

Besides keeping your OS up to date and have AV software on your computer, another thing you can do to check your software for malware is to upload it to https://www.virustotal.com/ this site checks it with all the AV instead of just one.

But you are never completely safe , there could always be a zero days exploit in software.

And using brand new software is a bigger risk then using software that already has been established.

Another thing you can do is run it on a virtual OS.
