What are faucets and are faucets safe?

I saw this thread https://bitcointalk.org/index.php?topic=354178.0 and it made me curious. I realized I can guess what a faucet is, but at this level of newbieness I shouldn't assume anything.

If they are what I think they are,  are they safe? Is it worth it to deal with faucets, and are there safeguards that one should take?

correct me if im wrong, but I believe faucets are just websites that pay you to browse the website. They owner of the page gets money from ads and he in return pays you for this. You dont make a lot, but if the webpage it self gets tens of thousands of hits a day it might generate quite a bit of money.

Faucets are safe they are a good way to earn money for beginners, who are just starting out their search of bitcoins.
You just have to have a wallet and then you do a task or something or write a captcha and a really small amount will get sent to your wallet
after it accumulates enough for a micro transfer.

It is a good way to dip your feet in the bitcoin world but really small and take a lot of time.
