True, at one point. But I think that the OP suggests that it sustains that lead.

Put it this way, BTC will either smash gold value, or forever remain below it. I can't imagine that the two will remain equally priced.

I don't see why we have to measure and compare the two. I hope one day for Bitcoin to surpass potatoes.

And how much is gold worth now exactly? What if gold drops to a low price? Neither values are fixed.

That's true, I'm not too clued up on gold prices but I think that it is around the $1000-1100 per unit mark.

I think that the two are compared as they draw some parallels. Both are finite, and both are seen as a store of value - though many people don't think that is the case for Bitcoin per se.

Bitcoin overtaking gold and sustaining that lead would be seen as a serious win. But right now BTC is so volatile, I'm not sure how much confidence people have in paying > $1200 per BTC until more commercial news has been revealed.

Well it is really a tough thing to say because we typically measure over here the value of gold by the ounce and if that is what you are doing than bitcoin far surpasses that of gold since bitcoin is measured by the full coin itself. Now ask me which I would rather have is another story. I'd rather have the gold because it is and has always been seen as precious metal and is a physical thing I can touch, whereas bitcoins are digital. I don't think you can kind of compare it that relation either. I think a better way to saying it would be bitcoin is the gold of cryptocoin world.
