Foot to the floor, brain in neutral.

First gear:  Decide that this Cryptocurrency thing sounds cool.  Download wallet and kick it into gear with laptop.  After an afternoon realise that coins have not rolled in; discover that GPUs are needed to up the hash rate.  Join a mining pool, get the hash rate cranking.  Now you have a hot laptop and still no coins.

Second Gear.  Rip apart that old desktop and put a couple of old gaming GPUs in.  You get it working, but it’s still not looking that impressive.  Get some risers and a chunky power supply and some 7950s.  Hah.  Your kick-ass miner is running at a couple of Mhash/s and there are signs of life in your wallet.

Third gear.  You have a variety of systems plugged into rooms in the house.  Your significant other is making threatening noises about the heat and fan noise.  You have a minor melt-down and an argument when she is using her hairdryer and all the lights go out.  You have been buying from multiple sources and your living area is full of packaging.  All flat surfaces are covered with pieces and wires.

Fourth gear. You have a dedicated space with a couple of racks of gear humming away.  A sparkie has wired you up a high current feed and the air con is set to stun (but losing).  You managed to convince your significant other that this hobby is worth the trouble because of the amazing rises in value of the currencies (you have neglected to mention the falls).  You have started buying in bulk.  Your fusebox glows at night.

Fifth gear.  Your dream of dedicated space, heat and power is going to make you a fortune (or lose you your house)...
