I knew about Bitcoin way back in 2012. For reasons, I was unable to maintain a large number of them. This sent me into the altcoin exploration jungle after the huge spike of late 2013. Since then, I've been in and out of LiteCoin, QuarkCoin, DogeCoin, MemoryCoin, and maybe even some others that I am forgetting. Finally, as of this writing, I am invested in Invictus Innovations (Protoshares) and RonPaulCoin. Both ostensibly instantiate the economic principles that seem to have inspired the creation of BitCoin. Nevertheless, at one point when I was visiting my parent's in 2012, I explained to them how BitCoin worked and what it was. Unfamiliar with that level of technological expertise, they simply gave me $20 each to buy one BitCoin for them. Needless to say, when it became worth $1,000 they were quite convinced.
