Is there a U.S. based company that can do escrow for digital goods?

The trouble with "escrow services" is that they introduce a third party who can steal your money.

Many PayPal escrow services turned out to be crooks. Bitcoin is probably worse.

Yup don't use a service, a flashy site will steal the biggest escrow and disappear. Use a trusted member here.

Bitcoin can provide the "escrow" part itself, which eliminates the risk of the escrow running with the funds.  You just need to supply the arbitration.

Bitrated has the right idea technically. That's been talked about for years; now someone did it.

How is it working out in practice?
