At least some alts are being developed for real sociopolitical or economic reasons, e.g. Chinese altcoins. Coinye West and all the other reddit meme coins are stupidities that keep the bulk of people outside of cryptocurrency.

it's not about need, it's about want... if enough people want to buy the new coins, then we will continue to see new ones developed... if people choose not to buy the new coins then we will see fewer new coins... that's how a free market works

nobody is forcing anyone to buy these copy-cat coins, when people stop supporting them then there won't be any demand for new ones
