Giving up on Bitcoins before I even got started

I'm giving up trying to get into Bitcoins. When I first heard about Bitcoin, I tried to get into mining; I thought I could just lend my computer's processing power out to generate Bitcoins in a pool-mining group, but I found out that unless you have immensely powerful, custom-made mining rigs set up, then mining won't earn you a single penny.

I tried to set up a wallet, but I had no idea how to operate it or secure it, as I'm only an average computer user. I recently also found out that my computer had a key-logger virus on it so I had to cancel and replace all my cards and passwords as I've made online purchases on my computer before. I tried to learn how to acquire and exchange Bitcoins but it required sending my personal information to shady, unreputable services that also required wire transfers, written checks and long validation times.

I also got scared by all the stories of scams, hacking and backlogged/bankrupt exchange services I've heard on here.

So unfortunately, after a month of trying to get into Bitcoin without even being able to get a single one, I'm giving up. I really hope that some reputable service providers start producing secure, easy-to-use and fool proof Bitcoin trading apps in the near future. Until then, the technical challenges and security risks just seem too high for me, so I'm out; sorry.

the best way to start is buy some btc and trade it. After that maybe you can look for mining/group buy.

Well that's a shame. I'd suggest using linux so you wont get viruses and just buy coins from somebody in person or a trusted escrow on this website, but there are plenty of legit exchnages. Bittylicious is very quick and easy to use, but you need to be in the UK I think. If you se the blockchain.info wallet and set up two factor authentication on your mobile and set up a second password, you'll be safe. Even if you had a keylogger it wouldn't matter with a second password.

I agree Bitcoin is now for tech savvy, but come back next year, hopefully secure hardware wallets and more Bitcoin ATMs will be available.

Yes I'd recommend the blockchain.info wallet for you for now.

I think however, you are wiser than most newcomers, and have seen it is sensible not to put too much trust in one place.

To "do something" with your CPU, sign up at ypool.net and mine primecoin, (Instruction on site) you can then trade them on BTC-e.com to get a little bitcoin to play with and find out how it all works without exposing your financial info.

Reputable places to buy would be coinbase.com in the US and cavirtex.com in Canada.

Seriously just wait until all that "hidden" money in overseas accounts is converted into Bitcoin to ease international transfer. We will be looking at 100,000 per coin with that kind of buy volume...

You would be surprised at what ten billion dollars of "buy" would do to the price of BTC... It's even crazier to think that ten billion dollars isn't even that much when compared to the "digital" US dollar floating around. It's plausible to see much more.

But that's entirely speculative and yet not so hard to imagine.
