hi, i just transferred bitcoin from my blockchain wallet to my electrum wallet. that went fine. i then tried to transfer a lower amount from my electrum wallet to my bitpay card and got prompted "insufficient funds". I tried it again for a much lower amount and got the same message. I then looked into my electrum wallet and the balance was 0. however, no money got loaded onto my bitpay card. in fact, no transaction was generated since i always get a prompt whenever i initiate a transfer from my electrum wallet to my bitpay card. the money is lost and i have no idea where it is or how to retrieve it. can someone help ? thank you.

Did you wait for the first transfer to reach your electrum wallet before trying to send out to your bitpay card?

You can use the transaction Id to check the movement of the funds.

Are you sure that you've used the correct address from your Electrum wallet?
If the transaction from your "Blockchain Wallet" does went fine, there should be a received transaction in the history tab on Electrum.

It could be:
  • The first transaction is still unconfirmed; if it is, just wait a little bit more before sending from Electrum to Bitpay.
  • Your Electrum wallet isn't synced and still haven't "notified" of an incoming balance.
Look at the lower-right circle on Electrum, if it is Green it's synced; if Red, you're offline or disconnected.
  • Is that "blockchain wallet" an online wallet? Because most newbies mistakenly identifies Bitcoin from Bitcoin Cash and most online wallets supports both currencies.
  • Your Bitpay card obviously didn't received anything since Electrum must've not received Bitcoins at all.
  • Lastly, can you show us the Tx ID of the first transaction (any link from a blockexplorer is fine) so we can tell the possible problems and solutions.

Assuming that you copied the correct address, the money isn't lost.

Yes, I made sure to wait until my initial BTC transfer from my Blockchain wallet hit my Electrum wallet. I tried tracking all the activity but it seems that there is record of Electrum sending my money somewhere but not to Bitpay. You seem very knowledgeable on this topic, where as I am not. I'd be happy to pay you to track and retrieve my money. Please let me know if you're interested. Thank you.

Yes, but was it actually showing in Electrum as "confirmed" (green tick)... or was it just showing up in the transaction list?

Furthermore... Electrum defaults to mBTC as the units... NOT BTC... so it is easy to get confused and to send an incorrect number of coins if you're not careful! Undecided

If those coins have indeed been sent out from your Electrum wallet... there is no way anyone is going to be able to "retrieve your money" except for the owner of the address the coins got sent to Undecided

Are you able to post the Transaction ID here? or via PM? Without the TransactionID it is difficult for us to know exactly what has happened.

Thanks for all your replies, interest, and advice. Since each of you bring up different points, I would like to address each of them, but prefer not doing it in a public forum. In addition, this site refuses to allow me to send more than two messages to members per day, which adds to the difficulty to communicate effectively and expeditiously. Please email me if you'd like to continue this discussion and investigation. I will be happy to compensate you if you can guide me how to track down and retrieve my money. I'd be happy to also discuss this on the phone and will give you my number once you email me. Thank you.

Hey you reached out to me via PM. I wanted to point out HCP here is much more knowledgeable than myself in regards to wallets and the intricacies of the network.

I would continue the conversation with them. Also there is no risk that I am aware of for you to post the transaction Id from the coins you sent in the first place, or even the public address used. I will stress not the private keys, just the address you sent the coins to.

I know I have heard things in the past that speak to the possibility of the address you copied being replaced with a different recipient address due to malware. So it is always good practice to double check the address after copying it and before sending coins.

Good luck

It is not possible to track the bitcoins if it was sent unknowingly, I only said that it could be recoverable if the fault was on given scenarios on my reply above.

The bolded text in the quoted message suggests that you could have been a victim of a malware.
The two possibilities are:
  • 1. Clipboard hijacking malware; if the transaction's date is the same date that you made the transaction stated in the OP, that malware must have changed the pasted address in your "send" transaction.
  • 2. Fake Electrum Wallet; if the tx's date didn't ring a bell, this could be the reason.
The official Electrum site is electrum.org, if you've downloaded your Electrum somewhere else, it's a fake.
If you're positive that you are using a genuine version, your system must be compromised (hacked).

I can't further help you with this, but displaying the Transaction ID in public doesn't pose an issue as Steamtyme said.
The Tx ID is always available online in any blockexplorer site, except if you didn't want to link the addresses to user "lastusername".

Just to clarify a few things... I've had a chat with OP via Skype...

- OP can copy/paste bitcoin addresses fine - so, no clipboard malware
- The transaction that has "gone missing" was sent to AddressX
- The OP sent another transaction to BitPay which also went to AddressX but was credited OK
- The OP has another deposit to BitPay that was sent to a different address and was credited OK

I suspect that the issue is with BitPay's system and it failing to credit deposits correctly for whatever reason. I have advised the OP to contact Bitpay Support and see if they can investigate why the deposit has not been credited correctly.

EDIT:
Ok... so as it turns out... the culprit was actually "Electrum Pro"  Angry

Unfortunately, the OP had received some bad advice from a third party and had been using "Electrum Pro" to pay the Bitpay.com invoices received when funding their Bitpay card. On further investigation, there had already been a few other instances of funds being stolen... but for much smaller amounts that the OP had not noticed.

There was a pattern where OP would transfer to Electrum Pro, Pay bitpay.com invoice and then any leftover funds would be transferred out at a later time. Unfortunately, this time, the scammers saw the deposit and transferred it out before he sent to Bitpay.

OP is now using bitpaydecoder.org to decode bitpay.com invoices to a BTC address+Amount so they can simply pay directly from their original wallet without needing to use an intermediary wallet like Electrum.

TLDR;
- OP got scammed by "Electrum Pro"  Angry
- Bitpay not at fault
