Hi folks,

what do you think about namecoin? Will they have a future?
Are there any trading sites or charts for name coins? Does mining namecoin gain any profit?

I know that is more than one question, but..  Smiley

seems like a cool way to decentralize domainname-registration and -control.

no idea, would be nice though, just because an owner of a domain-name is also the only one in control.

probably yes, although i personally don't use any, cuz i already have some namecoins, currently don't need any more and don't want to sell those i got.

well, it'll gain you namecoins, up to you what to do with them, sell them, trade them, keep them to get free (as in freedom) domains.

But how can it be used, since todays software like browsers are hardwired with dns?
Do I need a browser plugin or use some kind of proxy server or local proxy software?

http://dot-bit.org/HowToBrowseBitDomains

The biggest hurdle is that domains can't be used without a browser plug-in or DNS modifications. There are probably less than 1000 (less than 100?) people that have actually set up .bit addresses to work. While the name can never be confiscated by the federales, it's pretty much useless anyway, as nobody can get to your domain without configuration (and it won't show up in search engines either). It's significantly easier to just bookmark an IP address.

I know three places where they can be traded:

For BTC:

https://exchange.bitparking.com/main

For BTC or USD:

https://btcex.com/
https://x.ruxum.com/

2 different forms of free-money: Freicoin (free of basic interest because it's perishable), Mutual credit (no interest because it's abundant)

https://imcex.com Bitcoin exchange supports trading Namecoins to Bitcoins and Liberty Reserve USD/EUR.
You might consider creating an order there - no need to deposit funds in advance. IMCEX will notify you when there is any matching request.
