The rain represents the hashrate (though they are not linked).
Thunder and lightning  represent transactions, and scale based on the size of the transaction.
A howling wind represents a new block on the network.

Yea - It's not meant to be practical     I use it as background ambience while I code. 

I get the data from blockchain.info.
