Look at some exchanges/market cap to see what's hot and what is not.   Don't just buy into an Alt without researching first.  IE.. DOGE is hot right now which means the price is probably inflated.  Could it go up? Maybe but it has a long way to fall.  It's much better to find a new coin that has properties you like. Then buy in at a low price.  Otherwise, might as well stick with the older Alts LTC/PPC/XPM.   Some new ones like BLC/HBN/PXL looks good right now for early adoption.   I wouldn't listen to anyone that just told me to go into 1 coin.... It's definitely the one they are invested in.

I dunno how I feel about NXT... what interests you about it?

Also, to answer OP's question: altcoins are not worth buying unless you're a shrewd trader, or a reasonably good trader with mining rigs.
