Hi all

My wallet, bitcoin q-t is taking an age to sync with the network. It will take days at this rate. I need to know if a transaction has happened. Do I need to wait until the network has synced in order to find out that information?

Thanks for helping me.

Yes your wallet must be synchronized BEFORE you make any transaction.

Time depends on your Internet  connection.
It might take a while Smiley

For me it is like 6-9 hours ... Smiley

If your starting from zero it will take days. Transactions will show up as the block they are included in are downloaded to your client. (bitcoin-qt)

Thanks. Its receiving that I'm looking for. I'm looking to see if I've received some coin. I take it I don't need to be synced for that.

Also, isn't this massive syncing time considered a problem. I'm sure it is so excuse my ignorance.

One final thing. When you close the wallet does it save your progress Re: syncing?

Yes.

You can do it in parts.

If you need to know if you received a transaction yet, find your Bitcoin address and type it in after /address/

http://www.blockchain.info/address/

It should show all transactions on your address, even if your main wallet is not synced yet. Smiley

Smiley

Anyway if you are not a miner you don't realy need Bitcoin-qt.
Sure you can  use it - but there are smaller clients that are nicely working.

Just as a side note; you don't have to be synced to receive coins, just to spend them. For example you could create a wallet and some addresses then take the un-synced wallet offline. If someone sends to that address you wont see it with the client, but it is recorded in the blockchain. Later when you sync you will have the ability to spend the coin and see it with the client.
