How to alt coin devs make money?

Since my question got lost in the alt coin sub-forum within a few minutes I would like to ask the question again.

How do they make money without instamining and premining?

I would guess clever variations of pre-mining

Donations, bug bounties, ad revenue, commercial deals, consulting and so on are all possibilities.

Well they hope to just profit from the coin in other ways. Mine and promote it then sell or trade it for other coins or maybe hold it and hope it worth something in the future. Most coins are pump and dumps but some have more longevity than others.

So they don't actually make much money they just want to get lucky and potentially make a coin better than any one else for example Bitcoin?

If you create a popular coin and quickly dump the coins at inflated prices then you'll be laughing all the way to the bank. Look at Maxcoin. It was selling for £20 on its first day, then quickly dropped, now they're less than a £1.
