The guys behind Vault of Satoshi appear to be giving all the good signs of a reliable service, of course it is early to tell.

Bitstamp is the oldest I believe, but as gox is proving as we speak, that doesn't speak much per se.

Kraken present themselves as "professional" but of course, that statement alone is worth nothing without proof.

I do not like to have assets on markets, I preffer to hold my bitcoins on addresses I own, for obvious reasons. That said, I obviously still use the fiat<->btc bridge. Which exchage would you recomend and why?

Also, feel free to post links documenting both positive or negative events relevant to such services' operations.

Thanks in advance.

Kraken and Bitstamp work well for me for several hassle free transactions on both.

Unfortunately I don't know of any reliable exchange for all Europeans. I now use a local exchange which works only in my country. I know exactly where their office is and I can actually go there talk to them in person. The "big exchanges" as they call them seem extremely shady. We don't really know who stays behind them and where exactly are they located. I don't want to use such services. I hope that eventual regulation will bring honest and reliable exchanges in the market. This is still the biggest weakness of cryptocurrencies.

the exchange regulation bring in, will they give all user information to the regulation? for example, FBitcoinI Exchange? i am sure it helps to arrest any bitcoiner with a charge of money laundering

I think we need regulated exchanges with clear rules. The current shell companies and personal websites run by 10 years old are not the exchanges I want. I don't want to see more gox episodes in the future. It will destroy any confidence in bitcoin.

I've used bitstamp for a few years and they seem mostly okay. It was disappointing to see them affected by the malleability issue, but at least they fixed it relatively quickly. Their communication wasn't the best at that time. You see occasional reports on here of people who experience delays or questions on withdrawal but they all seem to get their funds eventually.

Kraken is looking really good. I've only used them a bit over the last few weeks. They didn't have any malleability issues. What impresses me most so far is their communication:

Their volume is tiny though. I hope it increases.

Exchanges aren't the only bridge, though.  It's generally much easier doing it peer to peer and usually safer too, because you're not relying on a third party:  https://localbitcoins.com/

https://bitcoin-central.net

As far as I've been able to deduce, it's the most legally compliant exchange of them all.

Most reliable exchange in Europe is bitcoin.de . It's very secure, customers are very satisfied for nearly three years - no hacks, no un-announced pauses, no delayed withdrawls. bitcoin.de is compliant with german law, the ceo is well known in the bitcoin-scene and beyond as a founder and businessmen, bitcoin.de persuaded the fidor bank to cooperate with bitcoin-companies, the support is famous to be fast - so yes, there is at least one really reliable exchange already.

I hear only good feedback about bitcoin.de lately. I think I should try them. There must at least one reliable service.

but please be aware that on  bitcoin.de the trades are directly person to person. the exchange just keeps the btc in escrow. no fiat ever is transfered to the xchange itself.
