Decentralisation seems to be at the heart of bitcoin and while the importance of the blockchain is pretty obvious, how this public ledger operates is often overlooked considering it isn’t controlled by a single person or entity. So, what is bitcoin mining and how does it work?

Head over to this site: Everything you need to know about Bitcoin mining https://www.bitcoinmining.com/

To answer your topic question: It can be profitable if you know what you're doing, as it really depends on many factors (electricity, hardware, hardware deterioration, resell values, etc). Most people that mine bitcoin for a profit use ASIC[1] miners instead of GPUs. Right now GPUs are being used more on mining altcoins.

Keep in mind that you have to invest an huge amount of money before you can even start mining BTCs. If you live in a country with rather low electricity costs mining might be profitable, but dont expect to get rich, those times have passed!
