It has been rumored for months that Blockchains, along with famous entrepreneur Ilon Mask, are secretly working to create an experimental smart city in Nevada, in the largest US Industrial Center Tahoe Reno (Tahoe Reno Industrial Center, TRIC). The Blokt website conducted an investigation, gathering all available information about this project.
In fact, very little is known about Blockchains. The fact that the company itself reports on its activities does not shed light on the scale of its work or plans for the future.
The head of the company, Jeffrey Burns (a lawyer from California, known for the fact that in the past his clients who had filed large class lawsuits, were successful), last appeared in public on October 9 of this year. This happened during the Tech Summit conference on the territory of the so-called Gigafabrika - a plant for the production of lithium-ion batteries owned by Tesla, in the Industrial Center of Tahoe Reno. The event was hosted by Nevada Governor Brian Sandoval. Along with Burns, Tesla and SpaceX founder Ilon Musk, as well as heads of Panasonic and other technology companies at TRIC, spoke.
Below is a chronology of the events of the last nine months, which gave food for talk about the possible participation of Blockchains in the project of the smart city Ilona Mask.
In January 2018, the Blockchains acquired a large area (27,000 hectares) on the territory of TRIC and began to prepare offices there.
After six months, the company showed its local office building to a group of local reporters. On June 21, Channel 2 reported that Blockchain had completely renovated the existing building, leaving only the old lining.
It is reported that the building, which will serve as the company's headquarters, is reliably protected, includes developer rooms, rooms for public and private conferences, and several office spaces for ETHNews, an online resource and cryptocurrency magazine owned by Blockchains.
The first about the business plans of the company told the head of the department of public relations Blockchains Sarah Jones. In an interview with Channel 2, she said:
We intend to become an incubator not only for blockchain technology, but also for artificial intelligence, 3D printing and nanotechnology.
Responding to a question about how the company plans to use the remaining 24,000 hectares, she noted that Blockchains can change the world and it has space for it.
At the end of August 2018, a startup submitted an application for launching a telecommunications service to the Commission on the use of communication services with multiple access in the state of Nevada. In the application, Blockchains is defined as a company intending to develop its own blockchain applications, create a project incubator and present “real scenarios for using the blockchain at TRIC and Painted Rock” (Painted Rock is a nearby area, its organization we are interested in also bought).
The document states:
Blockchains Communication [a new structure created in May 2018 and owned by Blockchain] intends to create and develop a new passive fiber-optic network in order to provide telecommunications services for companies operating at TRIC, as well as future residents of adjacent territories.
Moreover, in Appendix 6, in the “Potential Projects” section, the company claims that Verizon Wireless (the largest US provider of telecommunications services) is negotiating with it about building a base station, which it intends to deploy in the territory owned by Blockchains:
The station will house telecommunications equipment to provide a wireless solution that is in harmony with Blockchain Communication's efforts to transform the telecommunications industry.
The Tech conference, held on October 9, organized by the governor of Nevada, where Jeffrey Burns spoke side by side with Ilon Mask, was an event that sparked rumors about their collaboration. The joint project is the only logical explanation for the fact that Blockchains has acquired a land plot the size of New Zealand.
Speaking at Gigafabrika, the governor turned to the head of Blockchains and called the company "one of the most important pages" of the future Nevada. For his part, Burns said that the startup plans to create a unique and unprecedented sandbox for the blockchain technology, but did not provide any details. He also said that his company "will change the whole planet" and said that within the next ten years, Blockchains will hire from 10,000 to 20,000 employees.
The mere mention of cryptocurrency was enough to spread rumors.
October 23, Blockchains posted on its official YouTube channel a teaser ending with the slogan “I don’t want to wait.”
The heroine of the video is a girl who in the desert draws ones and zeros in the sand, telling how the blockchain is changing the world for the better and serves as a guarantee of a bright future for everyone.
Whatever the matter: a pilot project of a smart city, a giant blockchain-incubator or something else - Burns announced that the company will announce its plans on November 1 at a blockchain-developers conference in Prague.
