As a newbie, we must know this. A question here!

Seeing that newbies are getting tagged and banned here for plagiarism, we have decided to take part in getting the number come to a decline. For that, we have a question that we think, may be helpful to all the members of the community here so they don't tag someone for plagiarism if what we are proposing, is allowed.

A newbie or any member who copies their content (their own written content) that they have already posted at any social media like Telegram, Twitter, Reddit, Facebook, etc. should add credits by "linking" that content to that specific post?

We think that if a member posts his/her own content from any other source but it belongs to them only, then they should not be bothered to add links to those posts.

Or is it still considered plagiarism here to copy and paste our own content through various sources even if it fully belongs to us?

Self-plagiarism should be punishable, while not just reference it as your work for it not to be punishable. If I have a site and I copy from my site some contents and use it on a useful post on this forum, you will see me including the link to my original post, this can even help me to increase traffic of users visiting my site or the link.

Plagiarism shouldn’t lead to getting red tagged, but rather banned.

As to the question you’re asking, it’s always way better to prevent a post from being reported by adding the source, even if it is to a post made by the same person on another media.

I do recall a case or two where the person being reported for plagiarism has actually copied it from the media (using a non-coincidental user name). Proving ownership is easy by editing the something in the original source to link it to the Bitcointalk account, and that is what I remember a couple of those cases doing. Nevertheless, it’s better to prevent incurring in needing to provide evidences and such, simply by placing the link (and perhaps even mentioning that it’s the same person).

Since the mods will most probably not know that "the other place" also belongs to you, you'll end up banned and coming here to appeal, bring proof that you self-plagiarized and so on. Why the hassle (for you and mods too) when you can simply add the original source into the post, also helping your blog/whatever with back links?

There's literally no harm in copying the link from your other posts. I don't really understand the motive of copy, and pasting from another source, yet not providing the source. If its your post, your already at the source link, and that is another second or two of your time to get the link, and provide it with your new post. Do note though, that copying, and pasting in such a manner might actually be considered a low quality post, especially if its just copying it, and that's it not adding to it at all.

Basically, if you are copying from another source then always supply the link back to it.

We have asked this question only to make it clear to newbies what mistakes should not be committed at all, and this question is a necessary part of any member's mentality and sometimes, their "unintentional attempt" at copying and pasting their own content but getting banned. We hope this will help many newbie members joining this forum if they find our thread here and learn about not pasting anything without any source/links.
