From twitter:

Quote from: @acinq_co

Eclair wallet is a open source wallet for Lightning Network.

I see so many shitposts here about merit, price, etc, but nobody is talking about this?

People are doing transactions using lightning network with this wallet on the MAINNET. This is HUGE!!!

What do you guys think about this wallet?

Thanks for bringing this up here. It's getting easier for people interested in checking out the Lightning Network on the mainnet to do so.

Noice. Didn't know we would get a lightning wallet for Android this soon. I wouldn't personally download it as of now though, as I wouldn't be able to use it for now anyway. Probably only download it for testing purposes.

It's sad that it didn't have any impact over the price
I don't think wallets should really impact the price. Though adoption will.

I've been testing it out myself, and while it gets errors sometimes still, the more channels you have open the more likely your payment is to go through. It's a lot better than it was before, and it still looks great.

In case you're wanting to download it and try it yourself, here's a few places you can go and try to buy things (for cheap)

Note that the phone app cannot receive payments over the lightning network currently due to technical limitations. If you're interested in receiving LN payments, also check out the desktop app of the same name by the same group. https://github.com/ACINQ/eclair

I disagree. With something as complicated as the lightning network, a good wallet is going to make all the difference. If it's hard to use, it will severely limit adoption and people won't use it nearly as much, but with smooth, good looking apps like these there's a much better chance to get it in the hands of many more people.

I agree with you.
The projects that are the most needed now are the infrastructure ones, the boring ones.
Bitcoin adoption needs easy to use Wallets, with beautiful and friendly interface. Bitcoin needs a lot of exchanges, on as many fiat pairs are possible.

This wallet is just the beginning for lightning network.

People need to use lightning network without even knowing that it exists.

Actually, I created a similar thread yesterday, it seems that nobody browses that section.

I am still waiting for ZAP Android app which in my opinion looks better but I don't know anything about its features. I have already connected to a node using this Eclair app and there were no issues. I still haven't sent any transaction since I am still looking for merchants who accept LN payments and sell something useful. I found it easy to use the app, can we really make it more easier for ordinary people? Eclair already allows you to connect automatically to either their node or a random one.

Google play link.

I do like how the zap app looks but also I have zero complaints about how Eclair on Android looks. It's a fairly smooth and well-designed app and I'm very happy with it.

Well, you're right. But my point was it doesn't matter as much right now as the lightning network is steal at it's alpha/beta stage, as only the testers would use these wallets. But yea, a wallet with very good UI/UX should have a huge positive impact if the lightning network is being used by a decent number of sites already.

I've been testing it out myself, and while it gets errors sometimes still, the more channels you have open the more likely your payment is to go through.

this is not about elair specifically.. but LN's protocol as a whole

i predicted this months ago.. and its not a 'bug'. but a limitation of feature based on the tech. thus not an easy fix(without lots of open/closing channels(onchain tx fee's)

even funnier is that LN devs still are not being honest that to move funds involves locking in value. and fiinding routes.
many keep promoting that its just a deposit into LN once and infinitely be able to pay anyone any amount risk free

but the truth is not what is being promoted
EG if all you want to risk in LN is 0.01.. but know just 1 channel aint enough, so think 5 may work.. thats 0.002 per channel. meaning you can now only send 0.002 for the only route that works, and then have to close the other 4 channels (more onchain tx) and then reopen more channels incase the one you currently have, the counter party decides to go offline.
yep sorry folks. its not a open a channel and close a channel in 2 years to save onchain bloat.

alot of people still beleive LN is the trustless, permissionless, unlimited, never needs onchain again solution. when the reality is that opening and closing channels because route crash/counterpart offline/change their acceptable payment levels.

if only people became critics to actually mention the pitfuls, thus actually try asking for something better and thus getting something that could actually solve things. then real solutions would actually mature and solve things sooner. and not just suck up to devs and promote halve truthes,

Also, there should be beginner-friendly tutorial about LN since i never seen one (most guide i've seen still need manual setup in Command Line Interface)

It's mostly because Lightning Network clients configured for mainnet have been just released. You still have to run a full node and change a few things before you will be able to use them. Mobile applications are better in this case because they don't require user to modify a lot of things. I will think of making a tutorial for newbies explaining mobile LN wallets. Desktop clients are still too complex for ordinary people. Any ideas what must be included in the tutorial?

I've been testing it out myself, and while it gets errors sometimes still, the more channels you have open the more likely your payment is to go through.

What nodes have you connected to? Did you choose node by using LN explorer or random ones?

...even funnier is that LN devs still are not being honest that to move funds involves locking in value. and fiinding routes.
many keep promoting that its just a deposit into LN once and infinitely be able to pay anyone any amount risk free...

LN devs have been completely honest. Everybody knows that in order to use the LN you need to put funds in a channel. Whether you think making funds available on a ultra-low fee network is equivalent to "locking them up" is your opinion.

Also, you can just open a channel once and be able to pay people. You could pay people over the LN and get paid over the LN and never need to open another channel or close the one you have open, in ideal conditions.

...but the truth is not what is being promoted
EG if all you want to risk in LN is 0.01.. but know just 1 channel aint enough, so think 5 may work.. thats 0.002 per channel. meaning you can now only send 0.002 for the only route that works, and then have to close the other 4 channels (more onchain tx) and then reopen more channels incase the one you currently have, the counter party decides to go offline....

That's completely false. You can absolutely just open 1 channel with 0.01 BTC. And there is not just "the only route that works", there are many routes. Routing through a network is not exactly a new problem in computer science. And again, you don't have to close a channel when you run out of local funds, you can just receive a payment on the LN instead. Just how like in real life when you run out of money, you must get more before you can spend money. Shocking.

...alot of people still beleive LN is the trustless, permissionless, unlimited, never needs onchain again solution. when the reality is that opening and closing channels because route crash/counterpart offline/change their acceptable payment levels.

if only people became critics to actually mention the pitfuls, thus actually try asking for something better and thus getting something that could actually solve things. then real solutions would actually mature and solve things sooner. and not just suck up to devs and promote halve truthes,

Ignoring your bullshit like "route crash" (What is that even supposed to mean?), the rest of that sentence is completely false too. LN is trustless. Nobody ever said anything about "permissionless", and nobody said "unlimited" either. But it is entirely possible that with heavy adoption, people will not need to use on-chain transactions.

You're just spouting off nonsense. You can't expect to do that without retaliation.

Important information!

ACINQ informed their Twitter followers that they have lost access to the app signing key which is needed to update their app.

Quote
We just discovered that we may have lost the signing key allowing us to update the app[1]

More information is available on their Twitter, they will probably release a new app so it is recommended to close all channels and transfer BTC to a new app once it is released.

a channel is you and a partner in a multisig.
yes you can open just one channel. BUT your then reliant and have to TRUST on that counterpart being online to co-sign the funds to then allow them to in thier other separate channel with another partner they have on a route co-sign with their partner to hop the payment.

if your partner is not online then you need to open another channel with another multisig counterpart and fund that channel, to then route via a different direction to the end destination you desire

i know your trying to stir 2 scenarios into one to hide the issues. but hiding an issue is just ignoring an issue and doesnt solve the issue
EG you pretend 1channel is all thats ever needed which is a scenario if you only want to pay starbucks. by only connecting direct to starbucks

but
1 if you want to pay a friend and there is no connections between you and friend.. or you > startbucks > friend. then you need to open another channel.
2 if you want to pay starbucks  whr your only conneted to a friend and there is no connections between you and starbucks.. or you > friend > startbucks. then you need to open another channel.

you cant say that you can pay anyone all the time without issue from one channel ever. atleast be realistic

the best dev's and the best scrutinisers are those that dont promote something as utopia. but instead look for loopholes, bugs, issues, pitfalls.
so if you really want to do LN a favour stop kissing ass and instead run scenario's intended to break LN.
keep breaking it, until it wont break anymore

Hello, i downloaded the Eclair windows wallet, have it setup connected to my core node and funded a channel. what i worry is if something happens to my hard drive, while a channel is open, i dont know how to backup my windows eclair wallet. Nowhere did it ask me to initialize or write down a SEED words, and i cannot find where to find them. I notice a SEED.dat file in the eclair folder. do i just need to back up this file just the same as a wallet.dat file? i would PREFER to write my words down on paper INSTEAD of just backing up a file, where and how can i find my SEED words? or should i just keep multiple backups of seed.dat
thanks!

As far as I know, there is no channel backup feature and wallet recovery (seed is not being displayed to the user). It's weird because their Android wallet generates the seed at the first boot, allows user to set a passphrase with additional PIN protection and Google Drive can be used for backing up channel data. If you are only going to spend money on the Lightning Network then this app is a good choice. On windows, I would stick to LND or Zap wallet which is based on LND.

Sorry for my late reply. Someone might find this information useful.
