I’ve been thinking about moving forward with the cloud and how we manage data. I’m not sure if many of you know but the Xbox’s save files which are kilobytes and purchase verification keys are stored on their servers which the Xbox needs to connect to in order to recognize the correct save file and purchase verification to play games you’ve purchased. Could this server cloud system be replaced with blockchain technology? Considering data itself isn’t being uploaded or downloaded, it’s just a verification key and a save database to show where you left off in the game. I’m assuming a key number can be associated with that data so when the system starts up the game reads the key and then associates the correct data to the game (all the data would already be stored on the system, the key acts like a pattern for how the data is shown). It would replace the whole need for a traditional server. This would really only be possible if the entire game and all it’s data is preinstalled on the system, there would be no data being uploaded or downloaded. Is this possible?

It should be possible, I don't see why not. However, I also don't see the demand for such a thing. Are Xbox savegames that valued that you would go to the lengths of running and maintaining a blockchain just for this cause? there has to be a demand that covers the costs of such a blockchain existing in the wild.

Thus far, only Bitcoin makes sense. It's one of the main reasons altcoins are a bit of a joke. There is demand for decentralized store of value, not so much for everything else.

And didn't Freenet already invent uploading content in a decentralized way? It's some ancient software, I never tried it but I think you basically uploaded stuff into a network of computers and everyone stores everyone's else files and it's everything encrypted. Im not sure what the difference of this and a blockchain that stores files would be.

It's possible, but save games constantly modified as player made progress and Blockchain isn't suitable to keep file changes (especially non-text file). If the blockchain only needed to keep purchase verification keys, then there shouldn't any problem.
But if you don't need database which is distributed, immutable and have no central authority, you should use Distributed Database instead.

IPFS and Filecoin also attempt same goal, but the reliability/up-time of those (including Freenet) isn't very good as not everyone forced to store same file.

I see, so the main point would be the blockchain which is immutable, but as I said before, you are going to need massive amounts of PoW for that to work, and thus far, I don't see how it's viable to store big files in a blockchain an decentralized therefore immutable way, that is why only Bitcoin makes sense.

I remember reading about Factom I think it was, some altcoin that attempted decentralized data storage, I haven't heard from that in ages tho.

I wouldn't really trust anything but PoW to have a peace of mind that the data will remain indeed immutable. All other methods I wouldn't be too sure that in 10 years they wouldn't have been alternated, and 10 years at the top of the game like Bitcoin. Some altcoins may go for 10 years too without being compromised, but that will mostlikely be because they fly under the radar.

If an altcoin that isn't PoW and it's as known as Bitcoin and holding as much value lasts for 10 years after being attacked, forked and whatnot, I would consider diversifying anything more than a small speculative amount.

I would like to see a successful decentralized immutable file storage network, you could save your encrypted wallets in there instead of relying on an Electrum seed. If it's worth anything then it must be as safe as Bitcoin's private keys itselves.
