So, there are three books namely vol. 1, vol.2 and vol. 3  densely packed together  on the shelve.

The thickness of all pages of each book (not including covers)  is 5 cm while the thickness of their cover on every side is 0.3 cm.

The  bookworm has started his journey from the page #1 of the vol.1  and ended on the last page of the vol. 3.

Now the question. What was the length of his path?  


The Book is densely packed on the Shelve

the book worm walked the length of the book been densely packed together on the shelve from page #1 Vol1 to last page on vol3
 Vol1  Page thickness = VPT1 = 5cm
 Vol1 Cover Thickness = VCT1 = 0.3cm
Vol2  Page thickness = VPT2 = 5cm
 Vol2 Cover Thickness = VCT2 = 0.3 cm
Vol3 Page thickness = VPT3 = 5cm
 Vol3 Cover Thickness = VCT3 = 0.3cm

solution = VPT1  + VCT1 + VCT2 +VPT2 + VCT2 +  VCT3 + VPT3
  5 + 0.3 + 0.3+5 + 0.3 +0.3+5 = 16.2cm = length of his path

That actually depends upon the language of the books and the language of the librarian.
Titles on the backs of books are usually printed top to bottom in English-speaking countries, and bottom to top in German-, French- or Italian-speaking countries.
Obviously, a German librarian will usually stand English books on their heads and vice versa. Wink

edit: to give others a hint: if in one language and sorted by a librarian of said language, our book-worm will only have to eat through one page of vol 1 & 3.

If the books are positioned like this
VOL1-VOL2-VOL3
Then
Journey through Vol 1 = 0.3 +5 +0.3
Journey through Vol 2 = 0.3 +5 +0.3
Journey through Vol 3 = 0.3 +5 +0 (it didn't go through the cover)

total =  16.5cm

If the order is not the same, then, who knows

3 x 5 = 15
0.3 X 4(the first cover and the last one we do not count) = 1.2
15+1.2 = 16.2
The length of its road is 16.2cm

let's think of these if the arrangement of the book makes the first page of vol1 further to the right and the last page of vol3 is to the left

that means we have : VCT1 + VCT2 +VPT2 + VCT2 +  VCT3
                                              0.3 + 0.3 +5+0.3+0.3 = 6.2 cm

-for V2-V1-V3 length of its road is 0.6 cm
-for V1-V2-V3 length of its road is 6.2 cm
-for V3-V2-V1 length of its road is 16.2 cm

Ok; the complete solution is:

-for V2-V1-V3 length of its road is 0.6 cm
-for V1-V2-V3 length of its road is 6.2 cm
-for V3-V2-V1 length of its road is 16.2 cm
-for V1-V3-V2 length of its road is 0.6 cm
-for V2-V3-V1 length of its road is 10.6 cm
-for V3-V1-V2 length of its road is 10.6 cm

So; the possible solutions are 0.6; 6.2; 10.6 and 16.2 cm

Well; if we allow that one book can be oriented upside-down (or with spine against wall) then we have two more possible solutions: 5.6 and 11.2 cm
Other than that - I don't have any other idea...
