Ran across this and had a good laugh... but then it got me wondering if something like this could be done today

Who would be our Saints? What other commandments could we have? How long would it take to surpass the "church's" wealth? LOL

Interesting but I don't think it's achievable since bitcoin has been stated to be a currency since the beginning and it's already considered an asset.

Someone can up with some sort of religion where the "donations" are required to be in bitcoins though or something. I'm not sure what accounting gymnastics would need to be done for these "donations" to returned to the "followers" but I'm assuming it'll be like money laundering in the art market.

In both Clearwater and L.A., it is readily apparent that Scientology has more than a just a friendly relationship with local police. Just cross a member or even appear “suspicious” around their property and watch how fast police show up. However, the church owns so many buildings in downtown Clearwater, again the mass majority of which are almost completely void of any signs of life or use, that it’s more than a little creepy.

LOL, typical corrupt police. We also have a similar "religion" in my country, just with a more boring backstory since it's pseudo-Christian.
