Hey,
just started up my 290 rig for cryptonight mining. Can you tell me what to improve? I have read someone has achieved 750 H/s with a 290...?
These are my stats:
R9 290 Elpida 609.90 H/s Core: 947 mhz Memory: 1250 mhz
R9 290 Elpida Hashrate: 650.50 H/s Core: 1000 mhz Memory: 1300 mhz
R9 290X Hynix 671.60 H/s Core: 1030 mhz Memory: 1250 mhz

Hi there, i used these for the last 3 months, even burnt 3 of them (messy place not my own house).
calling 750 h/s achievment is bad. Claymore 10.2, set h= 928, stock r9 390 (1040 mhz OC from factory) will give you 860 h/s so, for a 290, just bump the memory abit, you will get ~820 and maybe 870 on the 290x. GL

Haha, 820-870 with one 290x would be unbelievable. Can you tell me your OC settings? I mine with sgminer so "-h" is not possible.
When I change memory of the 290X from 1250 mhz to 1700 mhz nothing changes.

I have 5 R9 290 GPUs. OC-ed: Core 1100 Mem 1250 Power limit: +50%
720 H/s per card (my Tri-x does 800 with those settings) 1030w from the wall.
Claymore Cryptonight miner
When I change 1100 Core/1250 Mem to anything else it all goes to shit.

do you have the bios file on your drive? that would be great! Would donate some satoshis to you for this. 1100 core 1250 mem already bumped my 290's to 696.30 H/s 691.10 H/s 655.10 H/s. Thanks for the info bro! Claymores dev fee though.

If I have any free time tomorrow, I could copy and send them to you . The card that is doing 655.10 H/s for you should also do at least around 700H/s. Play around with your memory OC a little, try the following: 1200/1225/1250/1275/1300/1325/1350. If you are using MSI AfterBurner DO NOT CLICK THE BUTTON THAT APPLIES OC ON WINDOWS STARTUP, it saves you from a lot of headache when you hit bad OC. If You get closer to 700, also play around with your core a little. I'm using Crimson 15.12 drivers.

I am on linux and changed to claymore-xmr 10 with same OC stats: XMR: GPU0 763 H/s, GPU1 710 H/s, GPU3 695 H/s @ Monero
WOW! Claymore is way better than SGMiner?
I'll get errors when I try to switch to ETN though... Strange.

I have the same pb with ETN, swith pool and now the only problem is nicehash devfee so waiting for an update from claymore dev.

R9 290 (and 290x) generally changes the memory timings above 1250 Mhz, so you might want to NOT bump above that - unless you can get to 1400+ Mhz reliably.
15.12 are the best drivers for those cards, and I fully agree on the "don't set AB overclock on startup" when you are trying to figure out what WORKS.

My base clocks for 290(X)/390(X) have been 1100/1500. Depending on memory type, manufacturer, straps and miner they are usually in 900-950 h/s range with those clocks. 390(X) can easily do more than 1000 h/s with some tuning, not sure if it's worth it though. Keeping Ctrl-key(?) pressed during startup should bypass afterburner OC settings, learned it the hardway myself. For example, 4 x 290x mining ETN with sgminer -g 2 -w 4 -RI 688, as you can see two turkeys (hawaii) doesn't make an eagle (vega) here:

It bumped up to 750.60 711.40 675.50 as I was changing to 1150-1200/1250. I also saw the max. hashrate of one 290 is bumping up 20+ minutes in after reboot. In the first minutes it is not as high. Why is that? I am also looking in buying Vega cards but all sold out or too overpriced.

R9 290 gives about 650 h/s on CryptonightR. These cards give 29-30 mh/s while mining on Ubuntu. You have to use Ubuntu version no higher than 16.04 because of compatibility reasons. You have to install driver version 17.40 and AMD SDK kit. It gives additional 10 mh/s (50%). There is a guide how to do it in Russian: https://www.cryptoprofi.info/?p=3313. Ubuntu will be useful for mining on all old cards including R9 280, 290, 295 and 390.
