I don't think anyone should ever work for other people for free, even if it's building a portfolio. I joined this forum so that I can offer my translation services, and I successfully found jobs as a brand new user without any reputation. If you have the skills, just offer them to other people. This forum is different from places like Upwork or Freelancer.

And if you want to practice, just make your own projects, and maybe you'll even make profit from them one day. It will be less stressful and maybe even more educative than working for someone.
