Looking for some general advise i received a $500 BTC payment from a customer. Looks as if i won't be able to recover the funds wanted to ask before i gave up all hope.

From what i have read with the Master Public Key cannot recover any account details. I used bitpay merchant account account

is there anything else i can look for to help

Well, you could start off by explaining what the problem is in the first place.

Did you A. not receive the money in your Bitpay wallet from your customer
or B. is bitpay blocking you from taking out your money (KYC?)

As long as we don't know that, or what kind of access you have to your wallet, (Do you have your private keys?), it's kind of hard to answer.

Hi AW

Thanks for getting in touch. Neither, from what i remembered Bitpay's setup was like coinbase back in 2017 where i could log in and manage our merchant wallet. The laptop we used was accidentally damaged so we can no longer login to access the wallet on that particular desktop. Upon logging into bitpay today, it's asking us to sign up as a merchant again.

However - we got the email from wallet-service@bitcore.io "[Wallet service] New payment received"

The only thing we have is the plugin containing our HD Wallet Address and Master Public Key + all the payment details of the customer who sent it too us

Any idea what the backup file name from bitpay would look like, I'll try searching through our USB's

Thanks

I haven't used bitpay wallet but the documentation indicates that it supports both BIP32 and BIP39.
So look for a "mnemonic phrase", something like random 12/24-words (that's enough to restore your wallet), look for text files or a written physical copy.
For the file backup, look for json files (.json) or encrypted (.aes.json) or even ".txt" file.

Then read the steps guide from their support: support.bitpay.com~

They also support Email Notifications, that's why you're still receiving emails despite the missing wallet.

The only thing we have is the plugin containing our HD Wallet Address and Master Public Key + all the payment details of the customer who sent it too us
Yes as you said in the OP, those are only good for "viewing" the balance and info.

bitpay is the name of a bitcoin payment processor. they also have a wallet app but that's a different thing. are you talking about the payment processing company or the wallet app? i don't think the payment processing company uses your xpub (master public key). what is this plugin you mentioned above? you need to provide all these details because we don't have access to your setup and have no idea what you have going on there.

Overwhelmed by the quality of the bitcoin community, As a merchant this has given me faith to keep continuing processing in BTC. It requires a lot of protocol which is fine, post this slightly expensive lesson.

Plugin/Module used

I'm trying to get access to my old blackberry DTEK which i hope i didn't throw out i think that has Bitpay android app on the device though it's a longshot. Otherwise i have to trawl through paperwork from Circa 2017-2019 to find where i may of written down the code

I have access to the Master Public Key and the Address generated by the Master Public Key to which the customer paid

The laptop we used was accidentally damaged so we can no longer login to access the wallet on that particular desktop.

How badly damaged, and in what way?  If the hard drive is still intact you may be able to recover your missing information.

But, I'm still a bit confused, because the BitPay merchant account is different from the BitPay wallet.  When you receive payments from your customers does the bitcoin go straight to your BitPay merchant account?  If so, all you need to do is regain access to your account.  Contact BitPay tech support, and they should be able to help you regain access to your account.

@DireWolfM14

Goes straight to the bitpay wallet. I was under the impression we when set up the bitpay account it was as a merchant (2017) doesn't seem if that was the case tbh i can't remember now

I know the wallet is setup on the blackberry because we had the same problem when we needed to process a refund of sending the money buyer and bitpay said we can't etc but i did directly from the blackberry

I'll need to have a deep dive in finding the blackberry and fixing the phone or finding the folder where i stored the phrase. Costly lesson (I'm sure there is far worse) next time i'll make sure i'll back up these keys

Out of interest where would you guys recommend backing up these "recovery keys"

ok so the plugin he used takes an xpub and derives addresses from that. it's not a custodial merchant solution like bitpay's. the bitpay he's referring to here is the bitpay wallet app.

@fattails bitpay does not have a version of their app for blackberry. it only has an android, iOS and PC version. if you didn't write down the seed words for the wallet when creating it then you need to a) identify which device was used to create the wallet b) find the wallet files stored on that device. If the laptop was used for it and the laptop doesn't work then you need to remove its hard drive and hook it up via a usb to sata adapter to a desktop PC. Then you'll be able to access the wallet files on it and use the bitpay app to open them.

If you haven't contacted bitpay's support team, it might be a good idea.  If they can help you they will.  If not, then you're right back here.

Not to be a stickler, but there are "private keys," and a "seed phrase."  I don't mean to be pedantic, but if you take a moment to learn the proper terms it may be easier for us to help you.  One of the issues you're facing is that (I suspect) you don't know the difference between your bitpay account, and your bitpay wallet.  Which is why I recommend you contact bitpay's support team.  They will at least be able to tell you if the funds made their way to your account.

I think you're talking about the seed phrase, which can be used to recover your wallet.  I recommend you store it in a fire resistant document safe.

Write it on a durable paper and store it on safe or/and hidden locationIf you have extra money and free time, you could write it on metal slate instead.

Browser/web version should be accessible from browser on blackberry device.

Don't forget "mnenomic phrase" (which often confused as "seed phrase).

The OP mentioned it was a Blackberry DTEK device... which runs Android.

I'm trying to get access to my old blackberry DTEK which i hope i didn't throw out i think that has Bitpay android app on the device though it's a longshot.

So, don't give up on finding your phone if you're unable to recover the data from the laptop.

I used Bitpay wallet (not Marchant) what I have remembered they asked to write down for 12 word mnemonic phrase during open wallet. I used it on mobile phone and write mnemonic phrase and re-eneter in order to create wallet. So I will prefer for look into 12 word mnemonic phrase and recover it. I think there would be something like wallet file on your harddrive if its alive.

Second thing is you may look for your old phone if its exist. Even software removed you may reinstall and wallet would recover automatically if it were installed previously. I have experience about it, somehow my Bitpay wallet were uninstalled from my phone, although I didn't keep any fund on it expect dust. But I reinstall Bitpay within couple of minutes on my android phone. That means there would any file exist on phone and that's how it recovered my wallet automatically and I don't need input 12 word  mnemonic phrase or any other file. So there is hope for you if you found your old phone. I don't think Bitpay support would help in that situation.

Hi All,

Managed to recover my old phone, I've made a copy of the backup key. The balance is showing as $0.00 as far as i can see the balance is still there from the customer transaction hash.

https://www.blockchain.com/btc/tx/66638e1795074e938d69fdde358c5b0eec7549b05148d29c6aa2ce20f70cd6f5

how would one go about using the private key to access that address or transaction hash. Though not 100% this is the correct mobile because i can't see the my personal email on the copay andriod app as that's what i set up > email alerts from wallet-service@bitcore.io

What format is the "backup key" in?

NOTE: DO NOT PASTE YOUR BACKUP KEY HERE!

Is it a long sequence of alphanumeric characters that start with "xprv" like this:
Code:
xprv9s21ZrQH143K2kn9UE5hubcwgZrZnHbkpoWNj483waQyLkC6XgPAiRxPEdEqxbBqF8ywReAp1pT3mXpx2pZmjwmtika9nFfAx7X7ANJXpWi

or is it a sequence of 51 or 52 alphanumeric characters that starts with a 5,L or K like this:
Code:
5KY2ai9J6aRTpvTnqgHsSiJ6eytmeDWFnTnSTSfmG61fbqRdrYe
L4owynbcTcWyQWyFKrRTeVGTxe7W3GC8FfDZMiJ6Mb7wNbucz6ss
KyWXH4sGjMXUEd5mUXNhcWNbpPEFfUjCKhCAKkKqfiYoDc6rDaae

Or is it 12 or 24 seemingly random words like this:
Code:
punch work enable choose gloom casual reduce pride party coral fly rude
Code:
still shine ball silver junk virus loud audit used decline glory valley steak nasty margin yard bunker canal demise eagle same coffee crisp myself

or is it something else? Huh
