Have you tried a different cable?
Is it recognised by the computer when you plug it in? Can you screenshot the error electrum is giving you and tell us your os?

Try running Electrum as administrator, that may solve your issue.
I don't know why but I'm having the same issue with my KeepKey, but it works if I start Electrum with admin rights.

Make sure that Ledger Live is not running in the background. I had the exact same problem when Trezor web wallet was running in the background while I was trying to use my wallet with Electrum.

Please read this guide
https://support.ledger.com/hc/en-us/articles/115005161925-Set-up-and-use-Electrum

Important points imo:

Uninstall Electrum and download again from Electrum.org (I prefer the standalone version)

Quote
Connect and unlock your Ledger device.
Open the Bitcoin app.(on device)
Launch Electrum from your applications folder. The install wizard opens.
Leave the default wallet name and click Next.
Select Standard wallet and click Next.
At the keystore screen, select Use a hardware device and click Next.
Select your Ledger device and click next.
Choose the right derivation path for your account and click Next:

Did you do that all? What is the point where you can move further?

I used to have the same problem with Electrum and my KeepKey wallet.  I fixed it by downloading the python tools for Keepkey.

There are Ledger official python tools available also, have you tried to install them from the command prompt on Windows ?

Open a CMD window by searching for CMD on the search bar, then, at the command line, type:

Code:
pip install ledgerblue

Probably grasping at straws here, but have you tried:

1. Restarting the computer... DO NOT start Ledger Live, just start Electrum and see if it detects the device
2. Plugging the Nano X into a different USB port (windows should detect it as a "new" device), then see if Electrum can see it

I would go for this as suggested by HCP as well.

Fresh restart and connect your Ledger wallet. Unlock it with your PIN, browse and open the Bitcoin application. Only after you have done that open your Electrum software and see if it gets recognized.
I never had to run Electrum as an administrator and I use Ledger Live with it as well but you just can't have both running at the same time.

Are you opening Electrum from a shortcut on your desktop? Try running it directly from the location you installed it on your hard drive.

Hey phillie, is it the case that you already have a wallet file called default_wallet? Maybe you have already created a wallet with electrum before using ledger nano x? In such case you can try using a different name, other than default_wallet, and so you will create a new one.
